MAKING A PRE-EXISTING PROJECT FUNCTIONAL
Customer’s needs or problems
Kurzzug’s beauty bag design started with the customer’s hand-drawn sketch, but we quickly realized that the central closure, as originally conceived, would not prevent the contents from spreading between the two compartments. Our team then studied it more deeply, produced the requisite technical drawings and proposed alternative solutions to improve the system of closure. This approach allowed us to create a product that was not only aesthetically faithful to the original concept, but also extremely functional, meeting the customer’s practical needs in a timely way.
Objective
To create a beauty bag that respected the customer’s ideas, while improving the system for dividing the two compartments, which presented certain functional and practical problems.
Background
Kurzzug – German niche company, with ethical aspects, medium-sized.
Challenges and obstacles
The project involved paying special attention to the choice of materials. The company is heavily involved in the recovery of materials from decommissioned seating on the Munich subway, and asked us to combine worn fabrics with fine leather. Our aim was to create a harmonious balance between sustainability and functionality, while maintaining the desired appearance and ensuring a product that reflected the customer’s commitment to the environment without compromising the quality, aesthetics and usability of the final result.
Solution adopted
The creation of a paper prototype proved crucial in helping to identify certain critical issues related to the ease of use of the beauty bag. As a result of this process, we made some minor changes to the design while keeping the original plan intact. We inserted a flap in the lining, which could be closed with hidden magnets to effectively isolate one of the two sections. We also added a zipper, in this way creating a new, practical compartment. These interventions improved the functionality of the product, making it more intuitive and versatile to use without compromising the aesthetic look desired by the customer.
Why
Practicality was a primary concern, but it did not involve changing the original design. Indeed, the beauty bag is part of a series of accessories with a very distinctive and recognizable style.
Result
A compact, functional accessory fully in accordance with the customer’s philosophy and aesthetic taste. The added value lay in creating additional useful sections without changing the basic structure.
Impact
The owner of Kurzzug called the beauty bag “Kulturliebe” (culturelove), because of “the ingenuity and love you people at Piovese put into creating it.”
Testimonials
“We at Kurzzug found Piovese to be a competent, flexible, innovative, and, above all, likable partner. We’ll be happy to continue to cooperate with them for a long time to come… Keep up the good work!👆”
Wolfgang Bischoff (owner of Kurzzug)
